McKenzie County Public School District #1 has received approval from the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) Unit Activation Board to establish an AFJROTC program at Watford City High School beginning with the 2026-27 school year.
The approval marks a significant milestone for MCPSD1 and provides students with a new opportunity to develop leadership skills, citizenship, personal responsibility, and character through one of the nation's premier high school leadership programs.
In its notification to MCPSD1, the AFJROTC Unit Activation Board formally approved the district’s application and expressed its enthusiasm for partnering with WCHS as part of its mission to “Develop Citizens of Character.”
“This is an exciting opportunity for our students and our entire school community,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Holen. “The AFJROTC program will provide students with valuable experiences, opportunities, and skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. We are honored to partner with the United States Air Force to bring this program to our district.”
AFJROTC is a citizenship development program sponsored by the United States Air Force that helps students build leadership abilities, strengthen character, develop self-discipline, and prepare for future success in college, careers, military service, and community leadership. Participation in the program does not require students to pursue military service after graduation.
“AFJROTC will offer our students an outstanding opportunity to challenge themselves, serve their school and community, and grow as leaders,” said WCHS Principal Jim Green. “We are excited to welcome this program to our high school and look forward to the positive impact it will have on students for years to come.”
MCPSD1 administrators are working closely with AFJROTC officials to finalize program details, including curriculum, staffing, facilities, enrollment procedures, and other implementation plans ahead of the program’s launch in fall 2026. Additional information about the AFJROTC program will be shared with students and families as details become available.
