Wolves Center Academy
The Wolves Center Academy (WCA) offers a flexible, alternative path to high school graduation for students who may benefit from a nontraditional learning environment.
Students enrolled in WCA have flexible scheduling and opportunities to work independently as they earn the credits needed to graduate. This structure may allow some students to make progress toward graduation more quickly than they would through a traditional high school schedule.
WCA emphasizes student ownership and accountability. Students are expected to take responsibility for their academic progress, attendance, and behavior while receiving the support they need to successfully complete their education.
WCA is committed to providing for the educational needs of students who choose to complete their education in a non-traditional setting by promoting student responsibility for academic performance, attendance, and behavior.
Application Process
Enrollment in WCA requires two separate applications.
Parent/Guardian Application: A parent or guardian must complete this application.
Student Application: The student must complete this application independently. Parents and guardians should not complete or assist with the student application.
Both applications must be completed before the enrollment process can move forward. Missing or incomplete applications may delay an enrollment meeting and could affect a student's admission to the program.
Families who need paper copies of the applications may pick them up at the high school office.
Attendance
Students enrolled in WCA are required to attend in person on a regular schedule. The high school's 10-day attendance policy is not enforced at WCA. However, attendance is taken each day to document student participation and progress and to meet program accreditation requirements.
Families looking for a fully online or work-from-home educational option with no in-person attendance requirement should explore our Watford City Virtual Academy.
Expectations
- Students attend school on the agreed-upon schedule weekly that is set in a meeting with WCHS administration, WCA teacher, student, and parent/guardian.
- Students will complete classwork daily on Edgenunity and work to complete four (4) classes a quarter. This is two (2) credits every nine weeks. Ideally, he or she will complete eight (8) credits in one school year.
- Students will NOT use any Artificial Intelligence or applications or other sources that allow them to cheat or plagiarize work. This also includes copying and pasting, using resources without citing them, or looking up answers for ANY quizzes, test, or final exams. Any assignment flagged as plagiarized or generated using AI by our screening system will be given a zero automatically. Repeated offenses will result in meeting with parents and/or guardians.
- Students will be expected to listen to and follow all school technology (phones, electronics, headphones, etc.) and behavior rules outlined in the handbook for the WCA. Failure to do so will mean that your student is sent home from the WCA for the rest of the day. Repeated offenses will require a meeting to see if the WCA is the right placement for your student.
- Students will be monitored using Go Guardian and will not try to access sites or resources actively blocked by the WCA instructor. Students will be monitored all school hours and for assessments (test, finals, and quizzes).
- Students will NOT use their personal devices (tablets, phones, desktop computers, etc.) to complete classwork in school or at home. The WCA has computers that can be taken home to work. This is a measure to prevent cheating and academic dishonesty. If this occurs, all courses will be locked until the WCA instructor can meet with the student.
- Students will take care of and prevent damage done to school computers and supplies.
- Students will not be considered a regular high school students, so he or she might not get to participate in traditional high school activities such as spirit week events, dodgeball tournaments, field trips, meetings, assemblies, etc. It will be a case-by-case basis for WCA students if they can attend the event and students must be in good standing and meeting progress goals. The weekly email sent will have information about the events he or she can attend.
- Students will be responsible for logging in every day and making progress in classes. Attendance and progress in classes by all students are required daily and weekly.
- Students will work independently and not disrupt other learners from working. If a student is sent home for disrupting other learners, he or she will be marked unexcused for the rest of the class periods that day. If behavior becomes a consistent concern, a meeting will be scheduled to discuss his or her current placement.
- Parents/guardians will communicate any absences to the WCA instructor by phone call or email. Notification should be as early as possible in the day or week to have accurate attendance for that day or extended time periods such as vacations or medical leave.
- Students, even if they are 18, cannot sign himself or herself out for the day. A parent/guardian is required for the absence to be excused.
- The only exception that would allow an 18-year-old student to sign themselves out is when the parent/guardian is no longer the main point of contact, but the 18-year-old student is independent. This change needs to be made with the main office at the high school.
- Parent/guardian will call or email WCA instructors about any time when a student is leaving for an appointment or for the rest of the day.
- Parents/guardians will not let his or her student participate in any events at the high school without letting the WCA instructor know about his or her participation and have the WCA instructor approve the absence.
- WCA students are NOT categorized as regular high school students and do not get to attend all high school events due to the differences and pre-set flexibility of the WCA program.
- If a parent/guardian calls or emails out a student from the WCA for a day or any set period of time, the student who was called out CANNOT go to any other school event the same day during school hours (8:00 am-4:00 pm) without approval from the WCA instructor or WCHS administrator. This would be considered skipping even if they are on school property. The student must be off school property if signed out by an adult.
- Parents/guardians will read and respond to teacher communication (phone calls, emails, postal mail) regarding work, absences, behavior, graduation plans, or other academic areas in the WCA. They will make every effort to make any meeting, in-person or digital, when requested by
WCHS administration or the WCA instructor. They will maintain a functioning email address and phone number to be able to be reached by school personnel. - Parents/guardians will work with students on getting work done and staying on track to meet their weekly, monthly, quarterly and year-long goals. This includes checking that the student is not using any AI or other banned resources to complete work quicker or to avoid completing an activity, test, essay, etc.
- The WCA instructors will monitor online class work during school hours (8:00 am-4:00 pm) and unlock any tests/quizzes/exams in a timely manner.
- The WCA instructor will send a weekly check-in report with attendance, progress, and how much time your student was logged into the online program. Important dates and information will also be sent weekly, including school events that WCA students can attend with permission for the WCA instructor/WCHS administration.
- The WCA instructors will input and record completed classes, final grades, and credits for students. The instructor will check transcripts quarterly. He or she will send out a quarterly report of important information and completed coursework notes.
- The WCA instructors will hold quarterly meetings with students failing to meet academic or attendance goals. These will be scheduled in a timely manner and offer options on how to meet (online, in-person, on a phone call, etc.).
- The WCA instructors will update students and families on any planned absences to prevent any confusion on unlocking classwork or accessing resources.
