Everett “Skippy” McRae-Lorenz, a senior at Watford City High School, has been named a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, established in 1964, recognizes distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in academics, arts, and career and technical education. Candidates are selected based on their performance on the SAT or ACT exams, or through nominations.

McRae-Lorenz is the sixth student from WCHS to be named a candidate for the program in the past 10 years.

"Skippy represents the very best of Watford City High School," said WCHS Principal Jim Green. "This recognition reflects not only his outstanding academic achievement, but also his dedication, leadership, and commitment to making a positive impact. We are incredibly proud of Skippy!"

McRae-Lorenz plans to attend the University of North Dakota to pursue a bachelor’s degree in physics.

"Being named a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program is an extraordinary honor," said McKenzie County Public School District #1 Superintendent Dr. Steve Holen. "We are proud of Skippy for this well-deserved recognition and grateful to the educators and all those who have supported him. This honor reflects the strength of our schools and the bright future ahead for our students."

Each year, approximately 5,000 students are identified as candidates. From this pool, up to 161 students are ultimately named U.S. Presidential Scholars.
