Else-Marie Westman, a physical education teacher at Watford City Middle School, has been named the 2026 North Dakota County Teacher of the Year for McKenzie County.

The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction selects one outstanding educator from each county annually through the North Dakota Teacher of the Year program, which celebrates the work of classroom teachers in kindergarten through grade 12. Nominations for county teacher of the year are submitted by members of the public.

"I am truly honored to receive this award," said Westman. "Teaching is a privilege, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such amazing students every day. The support and encouragement from our school community are what make it possible to create meaningful learning experiences for our students."

As a physical education teacher, Westman is committed to helping students develop lifelong wellness habits while fostering teamwork, perseverance, sportsmanship, and personal growth.

"Else-Marie exemplifies the dedication and commitment to student success that we strive for throughout our district," said Superintendent Dr. Steve Holen. "Through physical education, she helps students build habits, develop confidence, and learn life skills that extend far beyond the gymnasium and classroom. We are thrilled to see her contributions recognized at the state level!"

As McKenzie County's recipient, Westman will be recognized during a special awards ceremony on June 23 at the State Capitol in Bismarck.
